The Not Very Fine Art of Decluttering

So my life has reached THAT stage. Two of our three daughters have left the nest, and our third is looking to do so next year, and hubby and I are looking at a probable move sometime not too long after that. To that end, I thought I’d get a head start on the downsizing process. And wow, am I ever glad that I did, because let me tell you, after 20 years of living with four packrats, we have stuff crammed into every nook and cranny of this place. 😛

I can be a bit of a hard-ass about ditching things I no longer need, but man, let me tell you…when it comes to all the bits of broken pottery and tattered crafts made by wee hands? Turns out I’m a ball of mush. ::sigh::

I’m developing a kind-of-set-of-rules as I go, however. If it’s broken, it goes. If I can’t remember who made it for what occasion, gone. If I can remember who made it but I really don’t have room to keep it, I offer it to the creator. If she doesn’t want it, gone.

It’s a slow process, and not an easy one, but I’m making headway, I think. Several trips to the goodwill store have been made, the recycling bin has been filled multiple times, and more bags of garbage than I care to think about have made their way to the curb. I still seem to have way more in the house than I want to have, but I suspect this might require multiple baby steps.Capture

And speaking of babies…::sniff::…I found these today.

Dang, this is going to be harder than I thought. 😛

Iy, decluttering is so not one of my strengths. But it sounds as if you have a good system and are making lots of progress. Go Linda!

I’m actually a very organized person at heart, Bea. I think I was just overwhelmed by my packrats. 😉 And now that they’re mostly gone, my biggest enemy is my own nostalgia. I can’t win! 😉
