State of the Garden: January

000.4

Years ago, I read an article in a gardening magazine about how beautiful a garden can be even in the dead of winter under a blanket of snow. The writer talked about leaving many of her perennials untouched in the autumn rather than cutting them back. She pointed out that the seed heads provided food for birds and other wildlife, as well as interest for the landscape, and she included photos of her own garden as evidence. The article turned out to be one of those pivotal moments for me, changing my own approach to autumn gardening and giving me a whole new appreciation for the simple, quiet beauty of my space in winter.

Sadly, the recent freezing rain has pretty much demolished the more fragile stems in my yard this year, but even so, I managed to find a few corners that seemed worth sharing. This, then, is my own garden in winter. 🙂

I love it, especially the ice-encased berries. I like some wildness to a garden, although my neighbors would probably prefer I did more pruning 😉

Lol, D.D.! I’m pretty sure my neighbours feel the same way about me. 😀
