Holiday traditions and memories

When I posted my 30 Days of Holiday Magic Giveaway last week, I invited readers to share a holiday tradition or memory with me as a way to enter the giveaway.  And you have…but in a fashion that has surprised me, humbled me, and warmed every corner of my heart.

Your stories are funny, uplifting, sometimes sad, very human, and always real…and they share so much love.

They’ve also inspired me to spread the holiday memories net a little further. Over this past weekend, I’ve pulled together an impromptu blog feature for you with the help of some wonderful authors. Erin Kellison, Kerry Schafer, Mike Mullin, Kelly Meding, Carolyn Crane, Karen Docter, Julie Butcher, and Diana Rowland will all be sharing their own traditions and memories with you over the next few weeks…and I am beyond thrilled to have them here.

So…if you haven’t already subscribed to my blog via email, do so now, because you don’t miss out on the many upcoming faces of holiday spirit!

And if you haven’t shared your own story (and entered to win!!!) in my giveaway, now is the perfect time. 🙂

P.S. If you’ve already entered, take a moment to go and read some of the comments. You’ll be glad you did.

My favorite holiday tradition was when my parents were still married, and we’d put a pickle on the tree, and whoever found it, would be able to open a present on Christmas Eve

My favorite is waking up on Christmas morning and knowing there were books under the tree for me! My mom said I was the only child who wanted books more than a pony.

Growing up one of our family traditions was to get up early open our presents, get dressed and then go to our Grandparents for pancake breakfast. Their home was too small to host dinner, but with all the family arriving at different times for breakfast well still got to spend time together. Today, when I want to relive those memories I will make pancakes for Christmas morning for my husband and myself, and I can always count on pancakes at my parents or brothers house if I am lucky enough to be home for Christmas.

Since my son is born on Dec 10th we made it a tradition to never put up decorations or the Christmas tree until after his birthday so that the two events were each made separate and special. One side bonus was that Christmas trees are usually on sale by Dec 11th!! Plus we always did Christmas Dinner on Christmas Eve, something I grew up with because my Dad is Danish and they always did the big dinner Christmas Eve and opened presents too before going to Christmas Mass (Danish Orthodox) at midnight. So my kids always exchanged presents with my parents Christmas Eve after we ate ourselves into a turkey coma. Good memories!
